HOW TO SET UP A PENDULUM CLOCK

Place the clock on the wall.  Level the case.  The clock has been adjusted so that when the clock is level, the escapement is “In-Beat” or the tick-tocks are evenly spaced.  Start the clock pendulum swinging.  Do not give it a big swing, just enough for the clock to tick.
If the customer still cannot differentiate the tick-tock sounds, tilt the clock case slightly to one side or the other.  The comparison is then recognized.  Position the clock back to level and make sure the tick-tocks are even.  This process is the same with other types of clock – wall clocks, bracket clocks, mantle clocks, whether weight-driven or spring-driven, the principle of setting it into beat is exactly the same.
If the ticks are not even when the clock is level on the wall, the crutch/escapement may have been bent in transit from its correct position.
If the clock is in beat and refuses to run, check for obvious things such as the hands touching, weight lines fouling, pendulum rubbing on the case or wall.
The last thing to adjust is the clock hands.  Move the minute clock hand (long hand) clockwise stopping at each quarter hour (3 winding holes) or half hour (2 winding holes).  Let the clock run through its chime/strike cycle until the correct time is achieved.   If the clock’s minute hand shows a different time then the number of strikes, move the minute hand to the 12, let the clock strike, then move the hour hand to the correct time.
