"The Clock Fixer"

In for repair is a Waterbury steeple clock with alarm and pendulum indicator bob.   When it was brought into the shop, the customer provided information about a slipping/grinding sound coming when the minute hand was manually adjusted.  The clock is in nice condition given the age of the clock.  An estimate for this particular clock is about 1885.  A short history of the Waterbury Clock Company can be found by following this link .  Below is a picture of this nice clock: After the clock movement was taken out of the case, it was obvious what the problem is.  Follow this link for a short video of the excessive wear.  The customer stated and I proved it that the clock still runs.  This is also a verification that these American time & strike clocks are overpowered, i.e., the mainsprings are too strong.   Another interesting tid-bit of this previous repair was the clock was worn out a long time ago and the previous repair person c...

In for repair is a time and strike AD Mougin French clock.  The repair symptoms include the clock stops and the strike is flat. A closeup of the makers stamp: AD Mougin was a well-known French clock maker working in the mid nineteenth century. He is known to have made clocks in the French clock making region of Montbeliard (which is close to the Swiss border) and is also listed as having premises on the Rue de Turenne in Paris. He won two gold medals at exhibitions for his clocks and used these as the basis for his trademark which contain the ‘Deux Medailles’ . Here we have a nice German Grandfather/Floor clock.  It was purchased at an antique store by the customer.  Interesting story in that this customer found the clock and gave me a call for advise.  He explained what the clock looked like.  We discussed different features of the clock.  With today's technology, he sent pictures of the clock.  The clock looked like a keeper.  From the pictures, it looked like all the parts were there (and they were).  The chain was in pieces but repairable.  The face is beautiful along with the weights and pendulum.  The clock was purchased for a great price and delivered directly to my shop where I took a closer look.  The notes from the previous owner stated this is from the 1920's.  I  believe the movement is much older than that.  Given how the movement was held together, i.e. taper pins holding the movement together I believe this movement was made in the 1860's.
